HCG Assists Clients with Negotiating

A 2020 graduate of the Warrington School of Business at the University of Florida, Emma Whitner obtained a bachelor’s in business administration and master’s in finance. Before graduation, Emma Whitner participated in an internship with Heritage Capital Group (HCG), an investment banking and advisory firm with an office located in Jacksonville, Florida.

One of HCG’s successes included advising a client on a high-profile acquisition by automotive lifestyle brand Hagerty. The company assisted the Nassau County-based motorsport event Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, known as The Concours, in selling their brand to the automotive membership company, which would help expand the reach of their events. The founder of Concours, Bill Warner, selected HCG to represent the company in the negotiations for their experience in mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.

The Concours is a four-day event that has expanded from an attendance that initially drew 2,200 people in 1996 to one that draws around 25,000 car enthusiasts. Here, participants engage the classic car community through auctions, shows, and other activities. The Concours is also credited with contributing $4 million to local charities since its inception. Hagerty made the purchase to further connect groups in the automotive enthusiast community. They run and organize shows for the Hagerty Driver’s Club, with 650,000 active members. With The Concours as a part of the team, Hagerty will benefit from the Amelia Island's heritage of bringing car lovers together as well.

24 Gators Named on CSCAA

A senior at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Emma Whitner competes in the school’s NCAA Division I diving team, the Florida Gators. In 2020, Emma Whitner and 23 of her teammates received recognition from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American Team for their performance in the 2019-2020 season.

The CSCAA Scholar All-American Team recognizes student-athletes who have demonstrated excellence in both academic pursuits and athletic pursuits. On the academic side, honorees have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5. On the athletic side, honorees have participated in a qualifying meet or received an invitation to compete in the NCAA Championship.

In 2020, 24 students met these rigorous requirements, which represents the highest number since 2010 and the highest number from any individual Division I team. During the 2019-2020 season, the Gators achieved a dual meet record of 8-1, their best since 2007-2008.

NCAA's Combined Swimming & Diving Events

A University of Florida student, Emma Whitner is pursuing her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance. Emma Whitner is a diver on UF’s women’s swimming and diving team, which competes at the NCAA Division I level.

While swimming and diving are distinctly different aquatic sports, their tournaments have been combined since the beginnings of the NCAA championships. Doing so reduces the costs that would otherwise be incurred if they were held as separate events. Many college teams also consolidate their swimmers and divers into a single team. However, within that framework, the two sports differ greatly in terms of assessment structure and participation.

Pace, or how fast a swimmer moves between two points of the pool, provides the scoring parameters for the NCAA swimming events. For diving, scoring depends on accomplished moves, or the acrobatics the diver performs during their turn. Due to this, diving is more subjective when it comes to assessment. In addition, NCAA diving rosters are considerably smaller and have fewer events in contrast to swimming. The number of divers, or pools, that takes part in each diving session tends to be smaller too. Having fewer divers on teams and in tournaments is another reason for the rarity of events that are exclusively for diving.
